Let's revisit this exhilarating start and cast our eyes what else is in store over the coming weeks!
Highlights of the Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony was hosted by Liwei Wang, a 2010 UNNC Computer Science graduate. Professor Jon Garibaldi, the Provost, delivered a speech that reviewed the remarkable achievements of UNNC over the past two decades and proposed ambitious visions for the future.
Dr Yaping Deng, a decorated Olympic champion and Grand Slam table tennis winner, attended as a special guest and alumna from University of Nottingham UK, with her inspiring speech motivating everyone present. The heartfelt sharing by the first UNNC alumni representative, Yingfeng Xu, moved the audience.
Their words and sharing not only evoked fond memories of campus life but also ignited a spark of hope for the younger generation of UNNCers with big dreams.
Dr Yaping Deng answered three questions from alumni, which were inspiring and thought-provoking.
One member of the alumni community asked why she chose to study for a postgraduate degree after her retirement from professional table tennis, with the Olympian and Nottingham graduate responding: "Life is about challenging yourself, stepping out of your comfort zone, overcoming your fears and sticking to it all the time; in fact, it is not the winner who is king, but people who are consistent. Those who stick it out to the end, those who persevere, they are the real winners.”
Another UNNC graduate asked whether it is better to go forward in the midst of adversity or to bide one's time, with Yaping Deng’s responding: "The heart should be stronger after adversity, don't doubt yourself; it's good to encounter problems, let go of existing pride, and strive to move forward with less weight upon your shoulders. In terms of sport, there is a saying 'get down from the podium and begin again from zero’.”
And finally, when alumni asked at what age children should learn table tennis to emulate her success, she said: practicing sports is not only to become a champion, but to establish a lifelong sense of physical exercise; sport is also a hobby, a social outlet, and helps children better integrate into a group."
It has been an excellent start of our Alumni Homecoming Season events, with the day and its activities being warmly received by our alumni.
The 20th anniversary Alumni Giving Back campaign also opened to attendees over the weekend. Upon learning of the opportunity, alumnus Zihui Zou (Finance, Accounting and Management, 2010) immediately supported the development of his alma mater generously. He said, "UNNC has my four years of youth, and I hope that the love and spark will be passed on one after one through the donation."
Lingling Hu (English Language and Literature, 2012) supported the 20th Anniversary Giving as soon as she saw the donation link forwarded by another alumnus, saying, "Without studying at UNNC, I would not have had the wonderful experience of studying for my master's degree in University of Oxford. I am grateful to my alma mater and wish UNNC, my dear alma mater, a happy 20th anniversary! May my alma mater become better and better, and may the students and students of my alma mater fill the world!”
